World's Oldest Orchestra Tours USA Dresden Staatskapelle performs Beethoven and Brahms in six major US cities The Dresden Staatskapelle, one of the world's oldest orchestras, kicked off its US tour in Chicago in April 2005. The Stattskapelle's eight-city U.S. tour, under the direction of Myung Whun Chung with piano soloist Emanuel Ax, featured performances of two Beethoven symphonies, No. 6 in F Major and No. 3 in E Flat Major, as well as two works by Brahms – Symphony No. 4 in E Minor and Piano Concerto No. 2 in B Flat Major. Founded in 1548, the Staatskapelle, which in an earlier century performed many of Richard Strauss's world premieres, serves as the house orchestra of the Dresden Opera. While on tour this legendary German ensemble played to large, enthusiastic audiences in Chicago, Miami Beach, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, New York, New Jersey and Boston. In an extraordinary gesture to aid Katrina victims this great orchestra flew to the US twice in 2005, the second time to give a free concert in Houston, TX where thousands of stranded New Orleans residents landed. In 2002 the Dresden residents were themselves besieged by the worst storms in 500 years of recorded history and they reached out to Americans in Houston to give a free concert.
