Music in the Favela, Cidade de Deus, Rio de Janeiro
Classical Movements Supports Client Outreach
On their 2004 South American tour, The Yale Alumni Chorus provided inspiration and funding for the founding of a children's chorus in Cidade de Deus (City of God), a favela (shantytown) in Rio de Janeiro. Classical Movements participated in the original fundraising drive by the Yale Alumni Chorus Foundation.
Life in the favela is dangerous and difficult, but children participating in the Cidade de Deus Chorus attend weekly rehearsals which include choral singing as well as percussion lessons, building on the great drumming tradition in Brazil. Participants also receive a hot meal, have fun in a safe environment, and hopefully begin a lifelong love for music and singing. The Yale funding covers stipends for two instructors as well as the meals and rehearsal location.
In 2005, Classical Movements decided to continue supporting the favela chorus through interaction with other clients visiting
Brazil. While the Choral Arts Society of Washington was in Rio, Classical Movements arranged transportation for the children out
of the favela to where CASW was rehearsing. CASW gave a rousing rendition of "Ain't that Good News?" and the children, performed a song to great applause by CASW members, then received a MacDonald's Happy Meal, orange juice and chocolate, as well as a shirt or blouse.
Upon returning home, CASW members raised funds to purchase instruments for the Cidade de Deus Chorus, so the base of support for the children has expanded. This coming summer, Classical Movements is organizing an opportunity for the chorus to attend a rehearsal of the Melodia! Children's Music Festival, and have the opportunity to interact with their peers from North America.
