From the Big Apple to the Lone Star State
Dallas Symphony takes two tours with Classical Movements in 2005
In April the combined forces of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Chorus, and Children's Chorus of Greater Dallas traveled to Music Director Andrew Litton's hometown, New York City, for two performances at Carnegie Hall. The first performance opened with the familiar sounds of Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra; after intermission the orchestra and Maestro Litton were joined by the two choruses and featured soloists Heidi Grant Murphy, Andrew Skoog, and Richard Zeller in a stunning performance of Orff's Carmina Burana. The following day Litton led the orchestra and chorus in a unique family concert featuring orchestral and operatic favorites from around the world.
In November, the DSO embarked on a regional tour of four Texas cities under the baton of guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. Repertoire for the tour featured Huapango by Jose Moncayo, Brahms' Symphony No. 2, and the Barber Violin Concerto with 14-year-old soloist Shannon Lee. The opening concert of the tour played to a standing room only audience at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, followed by a performance the next evening at Maestro Guerrero's alma mater, Baylor University, in Waco. The final two tour performances were at the University of Houston and Texas A&M University in College Station. In keeping with the DSO's strong focus on education, the tour also included master classes by principal musicians in Stephenville, Waco, and Houston.
