2009 Melodia! South American Music Festival Expands Horizons
This summer saw Classical Movements' 4th annual Melodia! South American Music Festival. Choirs from the United States, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina all came together to experience music and new horizons in one great musical and cultural exchange.
In Brazil, the choirs participated in a Latin American music workshop with conductor and composer Oscar Escalada. A memorable moment for the choirs was the concert at the La Plata Cathedral, where they experienced unbelievable acoustics and were completely awe-struck by its beauty.
The performances at the beautiful Candelaria Church were very special for the singers. The Melodia! Finale concert was held along with the local guest choir, Cidade de Deus. This was a highly emotional performance in which everyone gave their best and it truly depicted the success of this tour.
Guest choirs for some of these concerts included Coro Infantil Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Coro de Escola de Musica da Rocinha, Brazil and the Philadelphia Boys Choir, USA.
Highlights of this festival included the collaboration with a music school in Argentina where the participating choirs enjoyed a cultural exchange and taught each other songs from their home countries. Another highlight for the choirs was the trip to Corcovado, the site of the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, one of the wonders of the world and a symbol of the city of Rio.
