Mexico Hosts the Yale Concert Band
The Yale Concert Band, directed by Thomas Duffy, started their concert tour performing at a major concert hall in Mexico City. Following that performance, they joined with the Children's Choir of Mexico at a Mexico State University. A favorite concert of the band was the outdoor evening concert in the 'Jardin' San Miguel De Allende Town Square. The Yale Concert Band ended their concert tour with an extraordinary performance at a School of Music and Dance in Monterrey.
On their last day in Mexico, the Yale Concert Band joined forces with the Association of Yale Alumni at a very deprived and underprivileged community. "The Yale Concert Band arrived, appearing in black-tie concert dress with polished instruments before a crowd that had never seen either a tuxedo or a musical instrument before. Before long, children who had never heard a band before were conducting one. Thomas Duffy started passing out batons to the children, who wildly imitated his conductor's flourishes" (Isaac Arnsdorf from Monterrey, Mexico, and Nora Caplan-Bricker from New Haven, Yale Daily News).
Mexico is full of incredible and historical sites and the Yale Concert Band got to experience many of them. They drove to the archaeological site of Teotihuacan, which is one of the most impressive cities of the ancient world, held sacred by the Aztecs. There they explored its temples, palaces and pyramids, including the Pyramid of the Moon, and the immense Pyramid of the Sun, ranked among the biggest in the world.

"Our eight-day concert tour with Classical Movements was perfectly produced, and gave us first-hand knowledge of the music and people of Mexico. Our venues in Mexico ranged from the high end conservatory to an established chamber music festival to (by our request) a field in a barrio. Each was successful, and we now have contact with artists in Mexico upon which we at Yale University will build a relationship. We plan to travel again and always with Classical Movements, and thank you all for your commitment to personal attention, for it made our trip unique and the perfect showcase for our unique talents and mission."
