Hired by Google, Classical Movements worked alongside YouTube and 21 C Media to bring the winners of worldwide auditions to Sydney, Australia from the far corners of the Earth. Thousands of musicians submitted auditions to YouTube where they were shortlisted by top musicians and then voted on by people around the world, in hopes of joining the YouTube Symphony Orchestra.
101 individuals from 33 countries and 5 continents, typical classical and some unconventional instruments, on various connecting flights from many cities and villages in far and isolated areas traveled to Sydney, Australia for the festival. Orchestra climaxed with its performance March 20 at the Sydney Opera House. YTSO members, directed by Michael Tilson Thomas, performed to a sold out audience.
A new work by Mason Bates was premiered and Renee Fleming was featured performing Mozart's Caro' bell'idol mio via video projection.
This was the second of the two YouTube Symphony Orchestras, the first being at Carnegie Hall, where Classical Movements' also arranged worldwide flights, instrument travel, hotels and transport.
