Classical Movements Instrument Donation Initiative

Classical Movements continues to collect musical instruments for talented and promising young musicians in South Africa. Partnering with grass-roots community music organizations, orchestras, and ensembles, we aim to match donated instruments with eager players who need them.

 How it all began

For over 30 years, Classical Movements has worked in South Africa, bringing American ensembles on performance tours. Through collaborations with local groups, we have witnessed the tremendous skill and potential of South African musicians, alongside the significant need for instruments.

In 2007, the Yale Alumni Chorus travelled to South Africa with Classical Movements, donating 40 musical instruments to the East Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, including six from Classical Movements. These instruments remain a vital part of the orchestra’s growth and success.

Renewed Inspiration

In 2022, following a two-year pause in tours due to the pandemic, Classical Movements brought the Minnesota Orchestra Brass Quintet and the Kennedy Center Opera House Quintet on concert and cultural tours. These included masterclasses and workshops, creating lasting connections between visiting musicians and local students.

Inspired by these experiences:

  • Douglas Wright, principal trombone, donated a trombone to a student he mentored during the Minnesota Orchestra Brass Quintet’s tour. Classical Movements’ Senior VP, Johan van Zyl, personally delivered the instrument on his next visit.
  • Michael Gast, principal horn, sought instruments for young musicians he had met, stating: “I wanted to keep music going for the students we visited and make a difference.”
  • Greg Beckwith, instructor in the Band Instrument Repair Program at Minnesota State College Southeast, offered surplus brass instruments for donation. Michael facilitated their collection and shipping to Classical Movements, ensuring young musicians had the resources they needed.

Continuing the Legacy

This collaboration among musicians such as Michael, Greg, and Douglas, together with Classical Movements, demonstrates how generosity can transform the lives of young musicians. By donating instruments or support, you can help nurture the next generation of artists and sustain the future of music.

Local Partnerships

Drawing on decades of experience in transporting musicians and instruments worldwide, Classical Movements is facilitating the collection and redistribution of pre-loved instruments to South African music organizations. These organizations will act as custodians, ensuring the instruments are available for aspiring students to use as they develop their talents.
