Ihlombe! Choral Festival

In 2009, Classical Movements launched the Ihlombe! South African Choral Festival. The Zulu word for "applause," apropos, Ihlombe! quickly became the largest annual international choral gathering in the Rainbow Nation, all the while giving back via wide array of musical outreach—everything from restoring the 1919 choir loft at St. Hubert’s Catholic Church in Johannesburg, free clinics with George Gobinga Mxadana and his historic Imilonji kaNthu Choral Society of Soweto, performances for patients at Pretoria’s Steve Biko Academic Hospital, to commissioning new music from leading South African composers. Shining examples of recent direct-action projects have included heartwarming interactions with the orphaned babies and vulnerable young people Rosie Mashale cares for at Baphumelele Children’s Home in the Khayelitsha township, as well as uplifting visits to Cape Town’s Amy Biehl Foundation Trust, a non-profit that advocates for racial and economic justice in the slain activist’s name.

Vietnam Necklace Project

Inspired by the work of American photographer Catherine Karnow, whose images document the effects of Agent Orange on the Vietnamese people—particularly, a photo of a little girl from Danang, Nguyen Thi Ly, and her prized plastic pearls—one of Classical Movements’ most unique efforts is the Vietnam Necklace Project. An ongoing solicitation for our clients touring mainland and maritime Southeast Asia, we graciously accept any necklace, bracelet or other piece of costume jewelry, as well as small trinkets and toys, that can be packed in a suitcase (or instrument case) and hand-delivered to these appreciative and inspiring children.

Building, Improving Homes

Partnering on the ground with local branches of well-respected international organizations like the Salvation Army, Habitat for Humanity and the Niall Mellon Township Trust, Classical Movements has made it possible for orchestral, choral and even wind band clients to actively participate in home building and beautification projects in areas as diverse as Australia, Central America and South Africa.
